 1. If CORU assigns the POA, you are supposed to work under a relevant employer for a specified period of time based on the identified deficiencies. In simple terms, POA can be said as a work placement or training period under the supervision of an Irish employer assigned by the CORU. To start this POA process, you must have the following:

  • A valid visa
  • An employer acceptance letter 
  • Approval of CORU for the employer-approved letter.

The duration of the CORU Period of Adaptation may vary depending on the identified deficiencies. It mainly depends on the CORU assessment decision, your previous clinical experience, academic background, and area of practice. Therefore, it is very important to meet CORU’s guidelines as well as the timelines.

The supervisor also plays a significant part in your POA. CORU has some conditions when choosing an employer. That means, your supervisor must be a registered professional in the same field, he must have good professional standing, and he must have enough experience to evaluate your competencies. 

Some of the responsibilities of the supervisor include :

  • Monitoring your work on a daily basis.
  • Assessing your clinical practices and decision-making skills.
  • Ensuring ethical behaviour and safe clinical practice.
  • Making you capable of meeting the CORU’s standards.
  • Submission of your final performance report to the CORU.

So, during the phase of your POA, you perform your duties under proper guidance.   2. Aptitude test : if your employer acceptance letter doesn’t get approval from the CORU’s side, you can apply for an aptitude test. It simply means you can opt to take an examination as per the CORU-recognized syllabus to prove your competencies. It can be online or offline, based on the identified deficiencies. 

Though the aim of both arrangements is to bridge any gaps identified during your CORU registration journey, the processes of both arrangements are totally different.

 3. Reapplication: if you’re unable to conduct the Period of Adaptation for CORU and aptitude test, you can apply for reapplication. It also gives you the chance to meet the requirements of CORU and make sure the gaps identified are addressed before uploading the new application.

  • Ensure you are following CORU’s guidelines clearly and stay updated.

  • Start searching for placement options immediately after receiving the CORU.
  •  Maintain proper communication with the CORU to avoid any kind of confusion.
  • Be clear with the Irish standards before starting the training.
  • Maintain good communication and professionalism with the supervisor, colleagues, patients, etc.
  • Keep notes on patient care regularly and ask for feedback from the supervisor regularly.
