PBNZ Registration

Your Fastest Route to Practising as a Physiotherapist in New Zealand

Already registered with HCPC or CORU? New Zealand's International Express Pathway could get you licensed in Aotearoa faster than you think — without a year-long assessment programme

What Is PBNZ Registration?

Your Gateway to Practising Physiotherapy in Aotearoa New Zealand

The Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand (PBNZ) is the statutory regulatory authority responsible for registering physiotherapists across New Zealand. If you wish to legally practise as a physiotherapist in New Zealand, registration with PBNZ — followed by an Annual Practising Certificate (APC) — is mandatory.

For internationally trained physiotherapists, the pathway can seem complex. At Beverse, we simplify this journey through our ProGuidance Programme, helping you navigate every step of the PBNZ International Express Pathway with confidence.

Why You Need

PBNZ Registration

Regulatory
Authority

The Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand is the official governing body that maintains the national register of qualified physiotherapists.

01

Legal
Requirement

Registration with PBNZ is a legal requirement to practise as a physiotherapist anywhere in New Zealand.

02

Annual Practising
Certificate

Beyond registration, every physiotherapist must hold a valid APC (Annual Practising Certificate) to legally see and treat patients each year.

03

Gateway to
Australia

PBNZ registration with an active APC is the recognised pathway to fast-track AHPRA registration in Australia via the TTMR route.

04

International Express Pathway

Who Can Apply

The International Express Pathway is the fastest and most recommended route for internationally trained physiotherapists seeking PBNZ registration. Unlike the standard general route — which may require a lengthy, year-long comprehensive assessment — the International Express Pathway allows eligible physiotherapists to apply directly without undergoing that process.

You Are Eligible If You :

Currently hold unrestricted registration as a physiotherapist in the United Kingdom (HCPC), Ireland (CORU), Canada, or South Africa.

Hold a physiotherapy qualification from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, or South Africa that is recognised as a pre-registration physiotherapy qualification by the relevant physiotherapy regulator of that country.

Already registered with HCPC (UK) or CORU (Ireland)? You are eligible for the International Express Pathway — one of the fastest ways to begin practising in New Zealand.

How It Works

A Step-by-Step Roadmap to New Zealand

⚠️ Important

You cannot legally practise as a physiotherapist in New Zealand until you have received your Annual Practising Certificate.

How It Works

What's the Process Like?

Gather Your Documents

Build your professional story — your identity documents, academic qualifications, proof of current HCPC/CORU registration, evidence of work history, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records.

Application Preparation

Prepare your PBNZ application in full, ensuring all supporting documentation meets the Board's requirements for the International Express Pathway.

Submit Your Application & Pay the Fee

Submit your completed application to the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand and pay the applicable registration fee of NZ$847.

Registration Granted

Once your application is assessed and approved, you will receive confirmation of your PBNZ registration.

Apply for Your Annual Practising Certificate (APC)

Registration alone is not enough — you must apply for an Annual Practising Certificate (APC) (NZ$410) before you can legally practise. The APC requires you to confirm your recency of practice as part of the Board's requirements.
